Applause, kudos to a hot new book, "BEING MORTAL" by Atul Gawande, practicing surgeon/best-selling author.
Love this opening line in his intro. "I learned about a lot of things in medical school, but mortality wasn't one of them." Eye opener, great ideas, but tenderly written. Take a look! If you have read it, what did you think?

Daddy had a beautiful, albeit untrained voice and often sang in our small country church. But now he was dying of MDS. Oh, I should mention that I am the oldest of 7 kids (big farm family in the Pine Barrens of NJ) and Daddy was also the oldest of 7; his youngest brother's being only 7 years older than I. OK, one of my brothers called me on a Sunday morning to say that it looked like Daddy's end was near; he'd been taken to the hospital and was now comatose. I was scheduled to preach that day so asked if I should call to explain and cancel. Jim said to just go on and then call after worship. I did,was told to come, so got the next flight to Philadelphia. I arrived close to 10 pm. Everyone else was already there including my dad's youngest brother. We prayed then began singing all the old songs we knew, Blessed Assurance, Great is Thy Faithfulness, Tell Me the Story. And my favorite... I still hear Daddy singing it..."Precious Lord, Take My Hand." As we sang, we watched the monitor for his heart go slower and slower, stopping around 11:30 pm. What a glorious passing for all of us.
