He hesitated

When I saw Len again he was walking at a slow pace in the patient wing of the Hospice House, dragging his oxygen tank behind him.

He was a skeleton of a man. His eyes, his skin, were yellow.

I introduced myself and asked if he might like some music later. He hesitated, then finally said, "I like country music. Guitar."

Why did Len hesitate?

Somehow my sense is fear of reaching out, fear of making connection; overcome by love of music.

Good point about the fear. Recall too that he had "accidents" as part of his illness so he may have feared he might experience that while i was in his presence.

Also, I don't think he had many "connections" in his life so having a stranger enter his only space, his room at Hospice, was HUGE! But like you say, the idea of having live music (with guitar), o overcome this fear!
