Shifted in His Seat

"Yeah, three wars," Andrew said. "War against the Viet Cong and against North Viet Nam." He became quiet for a few seconds, shifted in his seat. "And the unspoken war within our own ranks that reflected the Civil Rights movement and anti-war sentiment back in the States."

I stared at him. Cocked my head, wanting to know more about the third war.

Did you know about the war within the war?

In 1969, a company of MPs formed a skirmish line to clear black deserters out of Cam Ranh Village. It looked and sounded like a small battle. Shortly before, the deserters had raided the Army depot at Cam Ranh to steal weapons. Following that, one evening they machine-gunned our officers' barracks (I was there). The MP raid to round up the deserters was quite justified. Racial problems and murders were quite common in Vietnam.
